Local history

For those interested in the local history of Downham, a good starting point is to know your boundaries before examining the area on the 1843 Tithe map. Other maps can later be used to fill in the gaps between 1745 to present. The next stage is to find out about streets + buildings, and try to match them with names, numbers and old pictures of the area. Before the estate was built, most of Downham was farmland, and the 1843 map + apportionment schedule allows us to check which farm owned which land, including field names (in some cases) and type (pasture or arable). Landowners and occupants can then be researched using various sources, but first things first:

Downham (1843)

Next, I'll be taking a look at each group of buildings, and seeing what pictures I can find that feature them. If anyone can help identify any of the unknown buildings then please don't hesitate to post!

Isn't this wonderful information?  I've looked at the brochure pictures of Bromley Court Hotel and it isn't difficult to imagine the magnificence of the place when it was built.  But help me out a bit here.  Was this house the one that sat well back from the road somewhere near the posh end of Valeswood Rd?  Or have I got it completely wrong?

I always thought Bromley Court Hotel was a lot nearer to Bromley than Downham Way - but may be confusing it with another grand building.  Everything bigger than a council house in Downham was grand!
