« Last post by billbaker on July 30, 2015, 02:16:33 PM »I remember in the late 40s when some of us kids on Saturday mornings would turn up with air pistols to fire at the cowboy baddies, the screen must have been full of holes, it became so bad that the frustrated manager told us if we handed in our air pistols with our name on a label we could collect them on the way out, the following Saturday lots more boys than usual brought air pistols in just to be seen handing them in.

Sometimes one of the kids from our group would get his ticket and after the show began, they would open the side door so we could crawl in and find a seat. This was great fun and an easy way to see a free show, provided we didn't get caught! The only thing worse was if my Mother found out, then it would have been hell to pay. I seem to remember seeing the "Smallest Show On Earth" starring Peter Sellers. It's ironic isn't it, to see that particular movie at the Splendid. Anyone else recall those good ol days?

General Discussion / Bromley Court Hotel/Jazz Club
« Last post by joanie on July 30, 2015, 12:59:26 AM »It's been many years since I used to go to the Bromley Court Hotel/JazzClub to hear good music, dance and mingle with friends. I remember seeing several groups in the early sixties: to include the Davey Jones Band (of later fame as David Bowie), as well as the Spencer Davis Group (to include Little Stevie Winwood) who was too young at that time to even buy a drink, just as I was! Does anyone remember seeing Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen? Saw many other groups and indiviuals who also became famous later. Had a great time back in those days. I'm sure other "Downhamites" from my time can remember other shows at this club.....

« Last post by Brenda on July 26, 2015, 08:21:15 AM »My sister and I were evacuated with my mother to Fleetwood from Catford (just off Verdant Lane). I was just a baby so obviously don't remember. My mother couldn't stand the people we were boarded with. She said she was expected to keep me and my toddler sister quiet and used to say, "So, I came back home because I'd rather put up with the bombs that those miserable sods."
I've still got the identity card showing the move.
She remembers the plane that bombed the school coming over. She said she was cleaning the windows in the 2nd floor flat at the time and looked out to see what the noise was and said she saw the pilot's face clearly. I used to think she was imagining it but with the advent of the Net, I've seen quite a few reports of the same from other people.
