Title: Looking for my parents
Post by: Peter Adam Kelly (Pryke) on May 02, 2011, 10:04:01 PM
Hi everyone, Please help if you can, I am looking for my mother, she was living at 83 shrofflod road c1961, Her name was Vera Joan Kelly.
She may be married now, I have no idea.  If you went to school with her, which school was it and did she have any brothers or sisters?
When she was sixteen she worked at the local petrol station. If anybody knows her or knows somebody that might please let me know.

Sorry Peter, I can't help although I lived in the next road.  However, as far as I remember, there was no petrol station on the estate itself in 1961.

Have you tried Friendsreunited?  Local secondary schools at that time were: Durham Hill and Churchdown County Secondary School for girls. Primary schools were Pendragon, Ballamore and Downderry.

Good luck in your search. Do let us know if you get any good leads or if we can help in any other way.

Bren

That would be sad indeed, but at least it gives Peter a chance to verify this and at least he would know.  Peter, I'm sorry if this turns out to be true but even if so, you might still find some answers to your questions.

Hi guys.
Thanks for all the posts. I don't have much info to tell. Possibly her father was Hubert T Kelly. 1923-1997???
House transfer from greater London council  and H Kelly in 1981. I think he was something to do with the Lewisham area.

Further to the previous post, The person who brought the house on 83 Shroffold rd is A Wright. if any one knows of her it could be beneficial, she may know of H Kellys previous address and or other relatives, or I can search from and back track his data, Kind of a reverse search to his siblings.Vera kelly would be approxiamatly 66 years, putting here DOB around 1944-46.

What year was your mother born, Peter?  There are four Vera Kellys on people's trees in Genes Reunited: two born in 1944 and two born in 1949. These are people that are listed in family trees and could be the same person.  If the dates tally in any way with your mother's, and if you are not subscribed to Genes R, I would be happy to send a message to the four people whose trees this name appears on.   You never know your luck, do you?

By the way, concerning the 'father unknown' business.  This is also on my husband's (born out of wedlock) birth certificate and it was not something talked about in 'those days' so he had presumed his mother literally did not know.  It's not so long ago  I discovered  it was law (in that era) that the birth father had to give his permission to have his name put on the birth certificate.  As my husband's father died before he was born - he was a rear-gunner in a bomber - he obviously could not have done so.  All I'm saying is that 'father unknown' might not be a statement of fact,  and any child of that time who sees it on his/her birth certificate should not take it at face value. My husband did eventually learn his father's name.

I am so angry with myself for not trying this search along time ago. I didn't think I could feel so sad about someone Ive never met and never will.If any body ever thinks of searching for some one, DO IT NOW. don't have the regret.
Thanks again Bren for the info that has me on the way to contacting brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, thank you.

Pete Pryke kelly.

Great news that you have made contact with your uncle and therefore towards wider contact with other members of the Kelly family.  I hope it goes some way to help assuage the pain of missing out on meeting Vera by so short a time.  It isn't hard to understand how angry you are with yourself and I hope - I am sure - this feeling eases in time.  I missed my last aunt by only two years because I didn't commence the search for my father's family soon enough.  That was not as painful as missing out on a birth mother, I know.
Do let us know how the contact with your Kelly family goes, Peter.

And the thanks rightly go to Hoppo, I was only the messenger.

I'm afraid we were of a generation that didn't look back to the past very much, did we?  Not like today.  And when we were young, we were more concerned with the present and future.  Now we have more time behind us than is in front, we realise just how short time is.  Plus the interest in genealogy has been precipitated to a certain extent by the internet and that was certainly beyond our imagination, wasn't it?

Smiffy, your task in finding relatives and history is harder because of your surname.  Even posting a query on places like Ancestry.com has its problems - it's not the easiest to trawl through the hundreds and hundreds of messages left.  I left a message when I began my search and was very lucky in that a woman in Canada saw it and contacted me.  Turned out our respective great-grandmothers were sisters and she gave me a huge amount of information.

Where do you start with a name like Smith?

Bren

Pete Pryke kelly.

With my family tree I have found the Free BDM site invaluable.  www.freebmd.org.uk/
It is also possible to link to the General Registrars office to get birth/death/marriage certificates.  I have ordered and received these for many family members.  It costs about 7 pounds for each one.  With these certificates, especially the birth and marriage ones, it leads you one step further on.

My grandmother was a Smith, but I managed to trace her family back to 1423.  Ancestry.co.uk  is a wonderful site.  It has so much information stored on its databases, and it will automatically link you to the next peice of information.  The site also has census information as well, so you can make sure you have the right person.

Well, Hoppo, it was fortunate that you signed up to Downhamonline and thus were able to help Peter fulfil his dream of finding his birth family.  Not entirely in full - which is really sad - but wonderful to know his uncles are so welcoming.  No doubt they will be able to fill him in on the history and other things he needs to know.  Doesn't it feel absolutely marvellous to have been instrumental in all this?  It's just wonderful.

The late Keith Allen, a Downhamonline member, was brought up in Keedonwood Rd.  Like many of us, he left England many years ago and lived in W.A.

Interesting really how so many of us who are so very far from Downham now still tend to think of it as home.

What a wonderful, wonderful outcome for you, Peter.  It seems the Kelly family has welcomed you into their fold and that would suggest Vera would have done so too.
Now, as you are in the USA and they are - presumably - in the UK, what next?  I do so hope you'll keep us updated; I - and everyone else, I am sure - looks forward to the next happy episode.

Not long at all - those little leaves kept appearing (like in the adverts) and after checking that things matched, I will able to fill in more detaisl and more leaves popped up!
