Greetings Brenda,

Re Cafe Continental..... It ran From 1947-53 and aired for 45 minutes.

Emcee:            Al Burnett
Maitre d'hotel:  Claude  Frederic  and Pere August
Presenter:        Helen Cordet

By my math, you were three when it started and nine when it finished. You must have been one of the luckier ones with a TV set.

Happy belated birthday !

Hi Christine,

Was the  " Findmypast" website of use to you in finding lost relatives ?

A note of coincidence...I was born in Abbotsleigh House, a Nursing Home in Southwater near Horsham. It was alongside a railway line that no longer exists as does the Nursing Home; I am told.

I have seen photographs of the area and see that it is very beautiful but no longer a small rural area. After forty- one years in Canada, I must get back to see it one day.

Regards,    Graham A.

Where are they now? / Re: the Wright Family
« on: February 26, 2007, 04:52:20 PM »
Greetings Christine,

Searching for ancestors can be frustrating, time consuming and expensive as I well know. I now have a family record on my mother's side  back to 1518.

I have found the attached web site most useful and one which maybe of help to you.

Check it out and let me know how you get on.

www.findmypast.com

Happy searching.....   Graham Allen,

Season's greetings to all.....May 2007 bring you peace, happiness and good health.

Re your family tree..... The GRO is on line and all records can be searched there including obtaining copies of certificates.        www.findmypast.com         will get you to the site.   It is the old 1837 site.

Hope this is of some help to those hooked, like me, on Genealogy ?

Regards,   Graham A,   Canada.

General Discussion / ALASKA CRUISE PICS.
« on: September 21, 2006, 12:49:52 AM »
Mike.....Help!

I have tried adding more pics ....same process as b4..... However, after selecting pics and putting each on browser lines and pressing 'continue' I get this message and cannot continue....."Disk quota exceeded... You have a space quota of 1024k...Current files are 824k...adding this would make you exceed your quota" ..... then, nothing happens !!

Under the old system, adding pics seemed much easier.

Perhaps you could add a step by step instruction list to make my/ours lives easier when wanting to download pics for this site.....

With thanks, Graham.

I have managed to add three pics of our cruise to Alaska with friends from England.

Just as soon as I figure out how I can add more without getting an error message....I will add them.

Does anyone else have holiday pics for us to see?

General Discussion / Adding pictures to the picture gallery?
« on: September 17, 2006, 11:21:41 PM »
I have tried many times to add photographs to the picture gallery but cannot seem to be able to login like I could some time ago.

Is anyone else having the same trouble or are you able to assist?

I have asked Mike to help  but never have received a reply. Perhaps my e-mails are not getting through to him ?

My wife and I had a wonderful cruise to Alaska this summer and thought you might like to see some pictiures.

DICKIE..... Please accept my deepest commiserations on your recent loss.

Regards.....  Graham A

General Discussion / LEWISHAM SHOP

I remember Alders. Mr & Mrs Alder was a friend of my grandmother and I recall going there with her to buy some material. It was a dark spookey shop  with a man sitting high in an office at the back where all the sales money and change was delivered to and from  by a wire aerial delivery system. I can still see all those tubes flying by overhead. Alders was in Rushey Green on the corner of Wildfell Road.

Across the road was Gabledeaus toy shop which was always full of kids.

Does anyone remember the horrible, dirty house on the corner of Davenport Road with many caged animals called Pets Corner.  As a child, I bought a tortoise there and it disappeared from my garden and crawled away. Never did find it!

My aunt Eileen worked in the C&A shop in Lewisham after the War. It was in Lewisham High Street just past the train bridge at Courthill Road and opposite Morley Road and the High Street.

Len Styles music shop was on the corner of Courthill Road and Lewisham High Street where many teenagers use to hang out. Just around the corner was a Snooker Hall that, as kids, we were told told not to visit.

General Discussion / Property prices in Downham.
« on: May 15, 2005, 11:29:11 PM »
My father passed away in Dunstable  late last year and his house was listed with a local Estate Agent.

Not being familiar with property prices in England I checked out the local realators via     www.findaproperty.co.uk   and was very surprised at the prices I saw.

My next step was to check out the Downham area which I thought you might like to see if you too are out of touch with property prices.

Here are the steps that I took....  www.findaproperty.co.uk
Click on London (south of the river)   Click on Bromley & Bexley
Scroll down to Downham......Suprise ! !

Maybe some past residents will recognise some of the roads and dwellings.

My question is " How can young couples looking for their own home afford those prices let alone pay the rent that is being asked for?"

As an added note.... My parents moved into a new semi-detatched bungalow in 1966 for 3,00 pounds.....it is listed at 255,00 pounds.

Just think...when I was a kid I would take 36 bus ride for  1d to the Hippadrome, go up into the 'Gods' for 3d or 6d and watch Tommy Trinder play Carman Mirada and back home for another penny..... Those were the days.

I would love to buy you all a 6d pint. but would probably have to remortgage my house at todays prices for beer ....LOL. Take care,   Graham A
