Where are they now? / The Eagles
« on: August 10, 2006, 11:55:52 AM »
THought I would post this as a seperate thread. as lost on the downham shops thread.

Dad remembers the Eagles from Tristram Road he thinks that one of them used to be friends with his neighbours george and john Storey of 396 Downham way.
I was also wondering about the Eagles.
I went to School with Sharon Eagle(born about 1972) she lived in Hazelbank with her PArents and brother Brian(born about 1975) and Sister Denise(born about 1970ish.

Is this any relation to Dickie?

General Discussion / Going shrapnal hunting
« on: July 24, 2006, 01:55:01 PM »
My Dad used to go shrapnal hunting with his mates. and My Great grandmas house in Cranmore Road had the head of A shell come through the roof. Nobody was hurt which was great and they just replace a few tiles.
Another time a when a plane came down at Sundridge by the time my dad and his mates got there the Army Ploice were already in attendance.
I suppose it was quite common for young boys to collect spent bullets and stuff

General Discussion / Policeman that live in Hillcrest
« on: July 24, 2006, 01:47:31 PM »
My Dad was telling me of a Policemean that lived in Hillcrest. There was an Alley that cut through to Burnt ash shops and my dad used to go down this alley as it went past the back of the policemans house and him and his friends of which he cant remember their names used to Steal the rubard from his back yard.
Unfortunatily he was one of my grandads coal customers so dad was known to the policeman. So even though he never caught my dad when he was chasing him on his bike he did tell my grandad.

this would have been in the 40s

I used to stay with my grandparents in the 70s, they lived in Downham way in  a house that backed on to Lancelot school.
a couple of their Neighbours were Mrs Sutherley( not sure of the spelling) and mr and Mrs Storey. They were quite old so all their relatives had left home. I just wonder if anybody remembers them.

General Discussion / Durham Hill during WW1
« on: July 18, 2006, 02:25:22 PM »
I was told by my grandfather that Durham hill had an airfield there during the 1st world war.
Has anyone else heard this story? My Grandfather remembers watching the planes he would have been about 9 when war finished. So fairly reliable.
He has passed to spirit so I am working from memorys and notes I took. But not what you would call proper evidance.

The Merrygoround that came around on the back of a lorry just pre war. if you brought out a Jam Jar you got a ride on it.
My Father remembers it coming down Cranmore where his grandparents lived. But It never went on Downham way Coz the road was to busy even then.
