General Discussion / Christmas again??
« on: December 20, 2019, 09:36:29 AM »
I hope you have had a wonderful year, and if not, I hope 2020 will be a new start full of hope and peace.

Sue and I, after a few years in central London, followed by New York City, Houston, central London again and a few months in Downham, now find ourselves in Bournemouth. No, we have not retired!

The time has, maybe, come to mothball this forum - I am thinking of keeping it online as an archive for posterity, but closing it for new posts and members, as that should keep it secure and free from the bad guys who still like to hack these things from time to time.

Before I do that, one last chance for faithful friends who have been here over the decades, as well as new friends, to have a "final" say on this forum, and also to maybe recommend some alternatives. I know not everyone likes Facebook or other social media (I blow hot and cold on them for sure), so let's see what other sites are out there where we can keep the spirit of nostalgia alive, but also look with optimism to a bright future for Downham and the surrounding area.

In the meanwhile, I wish a very Merry Christmas to you and those you love.

Mike & Sue

General Discussion / Happy Christmas!
« on: December 24, 2018, 06:58:37 PM »
This forum has become very quiet, but I do get messages from time to time from new people asking to join, and you never know, it may pick up again one day. Social media has largely taken over from forums like this, but fashions come and go, so anything could happen...

In the meanwhile, if you have found your way here, then I wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas - all the best.

All the best to Downhamites past and present, and to your families and friends.

Resolution as always, is to pay more attention to the forum this year!

Have a great year

General Discussion / It has been a while...
« on: November 26, 2017, 11:00:42 PM »
Sorry for the radio silence recently! Sue and I have been living in New York for the past couple of years and life is busy, but that is no excuse for not keeping up with the forum recently.

We've received a few new registration requests over the past couple of months, so I will process those, and I hope there will be some interesting discussion threads resulting from some new members.

I hope everyone is doing well. I'll be back in Downham briefly in early December, and am always interested to see what has changed - and what hasn't...

General Discussion / New York calling
« on: September 19, 2015, 10:22:47 PM »
Hi regular readers and occasional visitors. I've upgraded the forum to the latest software to keep it secure, and the orange template I installed many years ago is no longer compatible, so have set it to the default theme for now, in case you are wondering why things looks different.

It's been a while since I posted - Sue and I have been busy moving from Downham to New York, so we now join the merry band of ex-Downhamites living abroad.

I'm encouraged by a steady trickle of new people wanting to join the forum, and in this age of social media with the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram tending to dominate, it's nice that the forum still does get some traffic and activity from time to time.

So, thank you very much for participating and all the best to you and your family, wherever you are.

To Downhamites past and present, I wish you peace, success and happiness in 2014.

High on the New Year resolution list is an update to the site, but that has been true for a couple of years, so please continue breathing in the meanwhile!

Thanks for participating here - it has become a fascinating glimpse into Downham through the years...

All the best

General Discussion / Website
« on: April 28, 2013, 06:34:27 PM »
Internet years are meant to be like dog years: one year = seven, so on that basis, I haven't really updated the website much for about 56 years...

So, time permitting, I will update the main part of the site this year, and in the meanwhile, the forum remains at your disposal.

Thanks
Mike

Not one for making resolutions, but I do resolve to post here a little more often than last year. Thank you to all participants for keeping things going for another year, and for some really interesting discussions.

Greetings to all Downham residents, past and present, and wishing you and all your families the very best that 2011 can bring.

General Discussion / Election
« on: May 06, 2010, 09:59:44 AM »
Not that this forum is politically biased one way or another, but it is worth noting that today's election is fascinating from many respects, and very hard to call anywhere, including Downham.
As for me, I'm stuck in Dorset for a few days so will watch events unfold in South London with interest...

Went to see a stage adaptation of Nina Bawden's brilliant wartime novel "Carrie's War" last night. I hadn't realised she was still alive! (Nina Bawden that is)
