I hope you are all surviving the Christmas madness.  Perhaps, like me, you ignore the whole business.  Having said that, I don't begrudge other people enjoying themselves so here's my best wishes to you all for a happy Xmas and a safe, happy and healthy 2016 wherever you are.

General Discussion / All quiet again
« on: October 25, 2014, 08:36:08 PM »
This must be the quietest the old Downhamites have been in the history of the site!  I've not got much to say but hoping this breaks the silence.    I trust you are all well.

This part of Australia is having a warm spring which does not bode well for the coming summer.  Rain please!

Those of you who have been members of the forum for some time will be sad to learn Dickie Eagle passed away
on March 12th at the age of 90.  I'm glad I got to know him a little more through his postings and his yearly Christmas card.  He'll be missed.

General Discussion / Quiet times

I see we are all going through a quiet time - or perhaps such an unquiet time, the forum doesn't get a look it.

At any rate: this is just to say 'hallo' to everyone and hope all is well.

I gather you folk in England are having a foul summer!  Your summer temps have been lower than our winter ones so far.  We are, I have to say, very glad of the recent rain which was very much needed.

I trust none of you are affected by the terrible floods in England and Wales at present.

In contract to your wet weather, ours is now prematurely hot and dry.  Today we are expected to reach 40oC here and we're not even quite done with Spring.  My husband - a member of the volunteer Country Fire Brigade, has already been called out to three fires.  It does not bode well.

I have it on good authority (a friend in London) that  the 'Penny for the Guy' tradition has now almost totally disappeared and has been replaced by the American 'Trick or Treat' traditions.   Any opinions on this?  Although I never made a guy - nor would I have been allowed to  ask for pennies on the street! - I find it sad to think it something else of England (as I remember it) has now gone.

Okay, all who are still in London and suburbs:  how is the Olympic hoopla affecting you - if at all?  And is anyone going to any of the events?

Did anyone have any celebrations or go to see the Thames flotilla?

We did have it broadcast here although the ABC (national broadcaster) had no plans to do so originally.   So many people wanted to see it (not necessarily just those who want to see Australia become a republic) and voiced their objections to it not being shown, the programming was changed.

It's a long, long time since Pauline has posted anything.  Does anyone know if all is well with her?
