The Walker family I knew lived at the bottom of Downham way there were 2 sisters Carol and Jackie Billy worked at the greengrocers in Catford just by the Black cat.

Your teacher Mr Rose did you know he was a fighter pilot during the 2nd world war,also he and Miss Oliver had a bit of a thing at the school found that out as a milk monitor ..Also the Young brothers lived in Moorside rd the family had a bike shop at Lewisham.

Hi Snowdrop,
My kids went to Malory me I went to Durham Hill which became Malory in 1958, Jackie Gasgoine lives in Torrindon Road I was mates with her brother Jimmy named after his dad who was a London Fire fighter during the war, They use to live in Undershaw rd but moved to Launcelot in the 60s

Where abouts in Durham hill did you live as I have lived there since 1978 and got my heart broken when they tore down my old school Durham Hill Tec College for Teds ,
I still have the brick with my initials scrapped into it which I collected when they knocked it down I put my initials in it in 1955

Hi Sixtieschick,
Yes the Baltabarin in the early days they had wrestling there as well as music groups and later on in converted to Bingo I worked there for a while in the 80s
Also re Clive Garthwaite he was found dead in the River Thames a few years back but he was a drugie and a drunk which was possibly why he was chucked out of the Baltabarin so often

Hello Jane,
Do I remember the Goldsmiths center well as a lad in the mid 50s I did some boxing there and had a great time with some good mates,, But in 1964 when I got married we had our reception there as it was the 11th Jan it was bloody cold and the caretaker had not put the heating on so we lit some fires with a load of broken chairs and such and soon got the party going

I used to go to school with Jean Irons she was in my mates class Mrs Davies was the teacher, sorry to say that Jean died a few years back from cancer it was just after she sent me a school class photo of 4b our class for the last 3 months of school.

Notable Downham Residents (past and present!) / Mrs Farmers stall

when I used to walk to school at Downderry I went past Mrs Farmers sweet stall in Shroffold road just down from Moorside cross roads this was in the early 50s anybody recall the stall and buying sweets for a happenny i/e fruit salad and black jacks lovely lady and her son repaired clocks.
I moved up to Downham from Walworth in 1949 came up on a tram went to Downderry school untill 1953 then went to Durham Hill tec college for teds.
Anybody remember the airplane that landed on Durham hill and they took it to pieces to get it off and when they took the tram lines up in Downham way we were up and down with the pram getting tarry blocks for the fire bornt a treat and saved mum&dad some coal money.I have had some great times on Downham and I still live here today just down from my old alma marta which they pulled down a few years back.

Hi in the late 50s we used to go to Durham Hill youth club it was run by George Green and Alf Mullery I met my missus there in 1960 and married her in 64 and we celebrated our 50th annerversary Jan just gone .
Also up the Tavern at the Moorside bit was a cafe we used it had pin tables and a couple of slots whiled away many an afternoon there.

I used to know a Billy Walker lived at the bottom of Downham Way with his sisters Carol and Jackie Billy work at the green grocers in Catford just by the black cat
