Title: Google Street View
Post by: Pauline on March 20, 2009, 04:09:31 AM
I have just realised that Downham is now on Google StreetView,  I can see my house, and my next door neighbour is just standing in the porch.

Just been on the site Pauline Iv`e got to admit its good you can travel up and down spin round turn corners . From the hight of the camera it must be a 360 ontop of a Van.

Ive just seen a photo of the vehicles that did it only on cars but the camera is about 3to4 feet on top.Its amazing what can be done now .But a lot of people have complained about the photos and that their security is threatened. So Google are taking them out.The funniest one was a man went onto his house and saw a car outside his house belonging to his wifes ex lover from years back .The photos were taken last Summer!!!

My sister found our house on it.  Now, why anyone would bother coming out this way and filming our place is beyond me yet my sister lives in town and her street isn't there. I must try and get into Google View and see the old place.  Wow!

Think we have been on Google Earth for some time because I remember seeing my old house last year and moving it around - great fun!

I can only remember the satellite view until recently.

Well, I found dear old Durham Hill but with the demolition of my old home and block and the school, and the addition of the new houses, it was almost unrecognisable to me.  How sad is that.

I am finding it hard to navigate though. I know I must be thick (and yes, I did read the instructions) but whenever I try to move up and down, I lose the view entirely.  Can someone tell me in words of not too many syllables how to travel up and down and go round corners.  I want to 'walk' from Durham Hill, turn into Capstone Road and get to the shops!

Must say, I was astonished and gratified to see how clean the place looks. Not all that many cars cluttering the roads either.

Brenda put the cuser on the arrow on the way you want to travel. keep pressing and the view will slowly change as you travel when you get to the turning the name should come up with a pointer then press on the arrow going that way ie to the left. then using the cicle of arrows you turn into the road then keep pressing the arrows to slowly travel along the road to the shops. hoped that helped.

It also depends on your download speed.  I only have satellite so it's a bit slower, and the view gets lost, but if you wait it will return, a bit fuzzy at first, but then will clear.  My daughter has superfast broadband, and she has no problems at all.

Thank you Splinter.  I shall give that a go.  Like you Pauline, we're on a satellite service so that might explain some of the problems.  Compared to the old dial-up (which was so slow, it could take half an hour to receive an email!) it seems fast but obviously it isn't.
Thank you both for you help.

Thank you Splinter and Pauline, I have now managed to 'walk' up Durham Hill, along Capstone Road, looked at the shops Up the Top (look a bit different these days), and down Northover.  It's a bit of a jerky journey although this morning, the computer was terribly slow and perhaps that had something to do with it. And when the picture disappeared, I  waited as per your suggestion, Pauline, and it returned.

Did I see a bus-stop in Capstone Rd?  And I also see some sheltered bus stops.  Could have done with those a few years ago!

Must say, the place looks a lot cleaner and tidier than I've heard in the last few years.

I shall be exploring some more.  Cheers Google.

Have not been on Google for some time so having "a lay day" today with a 35 deg forcast, I spent some time doing the look around. I found the sweet shop in Brook Lane where I use to call in after school (Burnt Ash School) for my gob stoppers and serbert for a penny, it's is now called Sheera Stores. Also the Sunday School I  attented, is now the Brook Lane Community Church, I remember being a member of the Boys Brigade there for a while. Whats are the poles in the streets around Downham with wires coming off to the houses, I thought OZ was the only backward place with overhead power poles in the towns. They look like May poles. Also I see  Deeprose Motorcycles in Brownhill Road Catford is no longer.

It seems my pleasant sojourn around Downham took me into excess usage.  Ooops!  Not that I get charged on my present plan but my speed slows right down and it's a pain.  I was quite surprised actually, because I had a lot of spare download when I went on.  Can't believe it used up so much.  I won't be going back on Google Street View too often, that's for sure. And that's a shame.  Anyone else have the same problem?

Always Brenda - I am always using up my quota for the month.  Then it's snails pace until the new month starts.  My daughter only lives 10 mins drive up the road, and she can get super fast broadband, very annoying, we can't get broadband at all - only on satellite, and that isn't too quick at the best of times.

I am at work, so I just had another wander around the estate.  I didn't realise that Churchdown is now a Catholic College.  It still looks the same, no-one there through.  Do you remember how we weren't allowed to go through the middle door between levels?  There seemed, at times to be Prefects (I was never one) stationed there not letting pupils through. Just looking at the place brought back heaps of memories.  The wooden classrooms out the back, and our attempt at a veggie garden.

The middle door between levels?  Can't remember it Pauline.  Can you tell us more?

I remember the door at the middle/rear of the building and the stairs to the 1st floor.  Other than that, I really only recall going up via the new wing.

No worries, Splinter, you'll never be talking to yourself. Well, not on here anyway!

Now found time to get on to Streetview and looked up my old house - certainly looks different to the one I left in 1959 - as does the road.  Of course in those days all the houses were council owned but expect most are now in private hands. Was a bit naughty whilst on the site and had a look at the house of one of my wealthier relatives - now know what sort of property you can expect to live in if you are married to a banker!  Don't know if any of you UK based 'Downhamites' listened to Jeremy Vine show on BBC2 this morning but mention was made of the site and in a village in Buckinghamshire the residents are very cross about the whole thing and do not want to appear on the site.  They do not want to be included in the pictures and feel that they could become the target for criminals so they formed a human hoarding preventing the photographs being taken from the camera mounted on top of a car. The driver and car retreated.

Yes i read about it Christine. I think the residents dont understand that it takes over 6 months to put on streetview and no thief would attempt anything that distant because of changes ( I`VE BEEN TOLD THIS FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW IE POLICE. I DONT KNOW PERSONALLY) .

How stupid are they, I would think that every thief and burglar in the area would now be hot footing it to that town to see what it is they have that they don't want everyone to see.

This message has nothing to do with Google Streetview - I want to know, Bren, what makes you 'Hero' status on our site and what you have done to deserve it! There is a worthy charity in the UK called 'Help for Heroes' which is raising money for our wounded service men and women and one of their fund raising items is a teddy bear called 'Hero'.  Now he is all cuddly and wears a rugby t-shirt - well mine does - so is this the requirement?

I am truly embarrassed to tell you all that I have never noticed the stars etc before. Or if I have, they have not penetrated my consciousness. Well, I guess it confirms what I have long believed - only half my brain operates.  I bow my head in shame.  How long before I need to book the bed in the nursing home?

Erm Brenda... to quote my clever grandson "Only 10% of our brains work, we have no idea what happens to the other 90%, maybe we can levitate or mind read", neither of which appeals to me - I'd like to keep my feet on the ground, and I really don't want to know what people are thinking.

Sorry about that - I must have a go at updating the photo gallery to something a bit more user friendly and functional. Please bear with me - might happen in days, weeks, I hope not months...

If you have individual images, do feel free to email them and I will add them in the meanwhile.
